The primary kite launch on the Mornington Peninsula, facing north into Port Phillip Bay. N–NW wind produces clean side-shore or cross-shore conditions across the flat bay water. This is Melbourne's home kite spot — technically flat, consistent NW Melbourne sea breeze, and 90 min drive from the CBD. The bay's enclosed geometry eliminates ocean swell, making it one of Australia's best flat-water kite venues.

FreerideFreestyleFoilBeginners

Hazards: Northerly wind can be gusty; moored boats along the shore require careful downwind awareness; swimmers and SUP users in summer; Melbourne's 'change' weather — conditions can shift from 30°C and northerly to 15°C and south within 30 min

Access: Marine Parade, Safety Beach. Large beach car park. 90 min from Melbourne CBD via the Mornington Peninsula Freeway.

Martha Cove / Martha Point

Intermediate+

Coordinates pending: local verification required

The sheltered marina cove adjacent to Safety Beach. When NW wind backs or strengthens to the point where the main beach gets choppy, experienced kiters move to Martha Point for a cleaner angle and slightly more shelter. Foilers favour this sub-zone for light-wind training. Boat traffic is the primary hazard — stay well clear of the marina entrance channel.

FoilFreeride

Hazards: Boat traffic from Martha Cove marina; narrow launch corridor; wind shadow from the marina breakwater in some wind directions

Access: Martha Point Road, Safety Beach — separate car park from the main beach

Boon Wurrung Country

Safety Beach sits on the traditional lands of the Boon Wurrung people, one of the five language groups of the Kulin Nation, who have cared for the Mornington Peninsula and the shores of Nairm (Port Phillip Bay) for tens of thousands of years. Schnapper Point — the headland the Tea Tree heritage references — was a known gathering place along the bay's eastern shore. Acknowledge Country before you launch: the bay you ride was a managed cultural seascape long before it was a kite zone.

Founded 1841 — Melbourne's Bay-Side Sister Coast

European settlement on this stretch of the bay dates to 1841, four years after Melbourne itself. Safety Beach earned its name as the calm-water alternative to the wilder Bass Strait coast on the peninsula's ocean side — a distinction kiters now read as 'flat water inside Port Phillip, swell on the back beaches.' Dromana, the sister village 5 minutes south, has the heritage pubs and main street; Martha Cove marina, built into the foreshore in the 2000s, is the modern bookend.

Mornington Peninsula Wine Country

The Peninsula is one of Australia's premier cool-climate wine regions, internationally recognised for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Within a 20-minute drive of Safety Beach you can be at Montalto, Ten Minutes by Tractor, Pt. Leo Estate, or Foxeys Hangout. The wineries cluster on the ridges behind the bay — the same ridges that funnel the NW sea breeze across the water. Non-kite days have a built-in itinerary the rest of Australian kitesurfing can't match.

Arthur's Seat and the Two Coasts

Arthur's Seat (305m) rises directly behind Safety Beach inside Mornington Peninsula National Park — the highest point on the peninsula, reachable by chairlift or a 20-minute drive. From the summit you see both coasts at once: the flat bay water you just rode and the open Bass Strait surf beaches at Sorrento, Portsea, and Rye on the far side. It's the clearest visual explanation of why this geography produces such reliable thermal wind.

Mornington Peninsula Wine Festival

October (annual)

Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron Bay Series

October–April (weekly)

Bay-wide sailing series with regular regattas passing Safety Beach waters. Mind the racing fleet on Saturday afternoons in summer — yachts have right of way and tend to round marks just outside the kite zone.

Sorrento Sandfest

January (Australia Day weekend)

Sand sculpture and beach festival on the peninsula's ocean side, 30 minutes from Safety Beach. The bay-side kite zone gets quiet during Sandfest — locals head over for the day, leaving Safety Beach even cleaner.

Getting There & Around

✈️

Airport

Melbourne Airport (MEL / Tullamarine), 120 km; Avalon Airport (AVV), 90 km

Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) is the main international gateway — Qantas, Virgin, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and most major carriers. Avalon Airport (Jetstar domestic/international) is slightly closer to the Peninsula but has fewer routes. Drive time to Safety Beach: 90 min from Melbourne Airport in off-peak traffic.

🛂

Visa

ETA or eVisitor required for most visitors

Australia requires an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) or eVisitor visa for most nationalities including UK, USA, Canada, and EU. Apply at eta.homeaffairs.gov.au before departure. New Zealand citizens do not require a visa. Always verify current requirements at homeaffairs.gov.au.

💰

Money

Australian Dollar (AUD)

Card is universally accepted. ATMs in Dromana and Mornington. The Mornington Peninsula is a premium holiday destination — budget AU$30–50 for a casual lunch, AU$80–150 per head for a winery dinner. Accommodation is significantly cheaper outside December/January peak.

📱

SIM

Telstra (best regional coverage), Optus, or Vodafone AU

Telstra has the best Mornington Peninsula coverage, including patchy coastal areas. Tourist SIMs available at Melbourne Airport. Prepaid plans from AU$30–40 for 30 days are good value. Most accommodation has WiFi.

🚗

Transport

Car essential; 90 min from Melbourne via Mornington Peninsula Freeway

Hire car from Melbourne Airport. Take the EastLink Toll Road and Mornington Peninsula Freeway to Dromana — fast and direct. Beach parking is free. No public transport to Safety Beach specifically, though the Peninsula Bus runs along the main road.

🛟

Safety

Safe; main risks are weather change and heat

Melbourne's weather changes are notorious — a 38°C northerly can swing to a 15°C south buster in under 30 min. Monitor BOM (Bureau of Meteorology) forecasts closely, not just wind apps. Sunburn risk is extreme on hot NW days. Surf Life Saving Victoria operates on the main beach in summer. No dangerous marine wildlife concerns specific to Safety Beach.

KTP Differentiation

What Nobody Else Tells You

Melbourne's Backyard Flat-Water Arena

Safety Beach is 90 min from Melbourne's CBD on a good freeway — the closest high-quality flat-water kite venue to a major Australian city. It's the spot where Melbourne kiters develop their skills, where clubs run sessions, and where beginners get their first water starts. No destination guide connects this geography to the fact that Melbourne has one of Australia's most active kite communities — and Safety Beach is its home.

The Melbourne Sea Breeze Phenomenon

Port Phillip Bay's enclosed geometry creates one of Australia's most predictable thermal wind cycles. On hot summer days, Melbourne's city heat combined with the bay's cool water generates a NW sea breeze that builds predictably from 11 AM and peaks at 20–28 knots by 3 PM. Local kiters session around this clock rather than general forecasts. This mechanical reliability is invisible in any travel content.

Kite + Peninsula: The Best Non-Kite Day Programme in Australian Kitesurfing

The Mornington Peninsula combines kitesurfing with Pinot Noir, hot springs, ocean beaches, farm-to-table restaurants, and the Peninsula Hot Springs — all within 30 min of the kite beach. On non-wind days there is more to do than at almost any other Australian kite destination. This is the argument for building your Melbourne trip around Safety Beach rather than treating it as a day excursion.
